the hawla tote

by DOUG JOHNSTON

About two years ago, Brooklyn artist Doug Johnston was working at an architectural metalshop where he became inspired to make forms and shapes using coiled rope pieces. He then came across videos on YouTube showing how to sew rope and fabric into coiled baskets--a method that dates back to ceramics and basketry of early civilization. Johnston started sewing baskets for family and friends and after about a year of experimenting with different materials and equipment he had his own collection of perfectly imperfect vessels. The flexible yet sturdy storage baskets are made from rows of 100% cotton sash cord, stitched together with different colors of thread, using vintage industrial zig-zag sewing machines. The rope becomes softer and more pliable with age while still holding the shape of the basket. Each piece is handmade and hand formed one at a time at his studio in Brooklyn.
